Third Annual Northern Neck Beach Music Festival Returns to Colonial Beach

Day of live music and fun to benefit Colonial Beach Community Foundation

Colonial Beach, Virginia—The 3rd Annual Northern Neck Beach Music Festival will be held September 12 on Town Hill in Colonial Beach. The fun begins at 12 pm with live music, shag dance lessons, dance contest, and more.

“We always have a ton of fun and a great turnout,” says Festival Co-Chair Joyce Gunderson, who is a beach music enthusiast.  “Colonial Beach is a natural venue for beach music!” The style incorporates rhythm and blues, pop, soul, a little rock and roll, and maybe some disco.

DJ Craig Jennings, host of WWER’s Beach Breeze and Grooves radio show, will get the afternoon started with plenty of music. Feature Attraction Band will take the stage followed by Festival headliner The Embers. Don’t know how to shag dance? No problem, there will be dance lessons and even a contest. Vendors will offer food and beverages, including beer and wine, for purchase.

Originating in the Carolinas, “beach music” is associated with The Carolina Shag, a style of swing dance that debuted around 1946. Shag experienced a transition in the 60s and 70s with a resurgence in popularity in the 80s. Today, new, original beach music is still produced and enjoyed, particularly in the coastal regions of the Southeastern US.

Hosted by the Colonial Beach Community Foundation (CBCF) all proceeds will go toward the non-profit Foundation’s Beautification fund. “As Colonial Beach attracts more visitors, residents, and business owners we realize the need to create and maintain an attractive environment,” said Cathy Bokman, CBCF’s Vice President of Organizational Impact and Northern Neck Beach Music Festival co-chair. “People want a ‘cute’ town.” Organizations will be encouraged to apply for beautification grants.

Rent a tent and enter the “Best Dressed Tent” contest. Decorate your rented tent for a chance to win a free tent for next year’s Festival. Tent rentals are $250 and include two admission tickets.

Advance tickets are available for $25 each from Colonial Beach businesses, including Hawthorn Mercantile, Riverview Inn, Beach Shop on the Boardwalk, Coldwell Banker Elite, Denson’s, Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce, and Hall’s Supermarket. Tickets can be purchased online www.nnbeachmusic.org for $35. Early bird rates until September 1. After September 1, tickets are $45 each, including at the gate the day of the event. Held rain or shine (no refunds). Bring ID, your dancing shoes and a chair. No outside food or beverages.
